Last Saturday i went to Mr.Chong Buck Tee's art studio, it was located at Bakti art centre. no.1-BR, jln kosas 1/2 tmn kosas ampang 68000, kl. It was quite far from my place and it was not easy to find.
Bakti Art centre is actually Mr. Chong's art studio and also art tuition centre. That is the place where he teaches people about Chinese Painting.

Interview session.

This is my interview questions (in chinese) as shown below. Basically the questions that i asked is mainly to help me in getting to know the artist better.

In summary, Mr. Chong Buck Tee started doing Chinese Painting at the age of 15. He learnt from a famous master Teo Nai Tong and a master from Taiwan. The reason he started to indulge in Chinese Painting mainly due to his own interest. He started passing his knowledge about Chinese Painting when he was 33 years old. The main purpose at that time was actually to find some earnings.

One interesting thing that he shared with me was that, not all Chinese Painters know how to write Chinese calligraphy. Out of 100%, there are 70% of people who does not know how to write. He told me that there are some Chinese Painter whom their Chinese calligraphy are actually quite bad. That is why some of them did not write chinese calligraphy on their art piece. They are trying to conceal by saying that their art piece is enough to explain/show the meaning of the art piece therefore, words are not needed there to further explain the art piece.

Mr. Chong always hold on to this principle which is, just draw anything. He said that it is vital to be able to observe things and create something new out of it.

In 1985, he came out with this idea of doing mono print in Chinese Painting. He actually used a glass plate with chinese ink painted over it and he pressed it against a piece of rice paper. After the ink has dried up, he will add some final touch with chinese brush. He said that the whole painting was spontaneous, it was not plan out. He also mentioned that this process is like an unexpected surprise that will lead you to imagination. It is because you would not know what forms will turn out once you remove the glass plate and you are going to continue it based on what you see.

Mr. Chong even held an art exhibition on this mono print technique. A book about this painting had also published. Some of his works are as shown below.

Mr. Chong actually got this idea while he was doing oil painting. He saw some of his friend after mixing color on the wooden plate, after used they will throw it away. So, he came out with this idea which is using a glass plate instead. Once finished painting the extra color can just wipe it away. However, Mr. Chong felt that it was such a waste by doing so, therefore, he thought this idea by pressing the glass plate on a paper. That is where he got inspired to implement this method in Chinese painting.
