He won several awards such as, the Excellent Award in the Malaysia Young Artist Competition (1989) and second prize in Malaysia's First Arabic and Chinese Calligraphy Competition on the Golden Rule (2004) organised by the Islamic Arts Museum (Teng, Y.Y., 2006).
His father is more to the traditional way of writing Chinese calligraphy. As for him, he is more to the freedom of expression in Chinese calligraphy because he believes it is easier to come up with a personal style.
Mr. Yap also realised that it is not easy to survive with painting because collectors do not spend much investment in painting and therefore he started calligraphy.

You can see that the strokes are like overspreading the rice paper making the chinese character looks illegible, abstract and expressive. He wanted to corporate western painting style with eastern calligraphy style.
